Question about Gold Eagles

I picked up my order of American Eagles today and one was dated MCMLXXXIX which is Roman numerial for 1989. I never paid much attention to this but when did they stop using the Roman numerial dates? Did they have both Roman and Arabic numerial dates in any year?

OK thanks... you would have thunk the Mint would have juiced up this series by having coins dated both ways in the transition year.
